March's Gothic Book Club Title & Upcoming Events
We're switching it up a little with the next selection, and I think you're going to enjoy it
Hawk Mountain is the debut novel from writer, essayist, podcaster and critical thinker Conner Habib. I consider him a little more than that, however, and let me explain why.
In the modern age of social media and content creation itβs quite easy to categorize or pigeonhole someoneβs work. The algorithm craves consistency and clarity. What then happens of the esoteric? Those who live in a constant state of movement, change and exploration?
Art, creativity and intellectual pursuit did not evolve to be compartmentalized to adhere to SEO requirements or algorithmic trends. They exist to bring together the actions of the mind, body and heart in a way that no other experience or activity can. This is a theme which is explored in various ways as part of Connerβs podcast, Against Everyone With Conner Habib. The show (which is available wherever you prefer to access podcasts), has an impressive roster of guests, but itβs the topics and approach which make it worth the listen. Not only are the challenges of artistic integrity, survival and craft examined in detail, but also the oft-overlooked elements of spirituality, enrichment and magic that are integral to the creative act.
If this sounds elitist, exclusionary or intellectually lofty, then fear not, for accessibility and simplicity are the manner in which these ideas are compacted and presented. Coincidentally, it was a similar project through which I first heard of Connerβs work. In 2018 he ran a course through the Museum of Literature Ireland entitled Ulysses for the rest of us. As someone who spent considerable time unpacking and examining that book without the aid of such a guide, I instantly recognized the value and generous intent of such an endeavor. Iβve been keeping an eye on his work ever since.
Which brings us to Hawk Mountain.
The themes of encroachment, memory, childhood traumas and fractured presents which fail to live up to our expectations, are all ones which resonate strongly. They evoke how pain and perception intermingle in our minds, distorting our view of the world and those who exist within it.
When Todd, the protagonist of the novel, is approached on the beach while playing with his son Anthony, it takes him a moment to realize that the handsome, smiling stranger is not so much of a stranger after all. Jack is charming and soon becomes an everyday part of Toddβs world, even becoming a playful and warming presence to Anthony.
Todd and Jack went to school together, but the relationship was very different then. Jack tormented Todd. Made his life a living hell. Why would he walk back into his life now? Was it guilt? Was it a new trick, stretched out as part of an elaborate plan?
Could it be because of what happened on Hawk Mountain?
This book hit me hard. There are sections (that I wonβt divulge in these early stages) which permeated my nightmares in previously unimaginable ways. To say it stayed with me would be an understatement; it would be more accurate to say that it now lurks at the periphery of my subconscious, appearing at unexpected moments to remind me of its inherent eeriness and introspective darkness. Itβs a book for reading multiple times, containing a complex array of narrative devices which results in an unforgettably unsettling experience.
Habib is deceptively economical with his prose, but his deft use of language only serves to accentuate the discipline inherent in his storytelling.
But is it Gothic?
Undeniably so. There is nothing more quintessentially Gothic in terms of storytelling than psychological dread, which exists in abundance throughout Hawk Mountain. Ambiguity and fear. Uncertainty and desire. Determination, assurance and regret. Doing something from which there is no turning back. All of these are themes which run through the greatest Gothic novels, and this is a superb, modern example.
That being said, like Habibβs non-fiction and broadcasting output, itβs transcendent of categorization, for it is also a story of sexual awakening; of family, longing, rejection, bullying and hatred. Itβs an affecting piece, but a worthy one. I canβt wait to hear what you all make of it.
Hawk Mountain is available in US and EU editions, with an audiobook version read by the author.
